Designing Emotion: How To Use Design To Move People

There is a misconception in the industry that designers are first and foremost communicators. While communication is the method of transfer, a designer is first and foremost an empath, someone who not only understands the emotions of others but manifests those same emotions in their work. This is the primary objective of design: to make someone feel something.

Without feeling, information is just data. Stefan Mumaw will show you how design can be used to elicit authentic emotions in your audiences through process, technique, and most of all, empathy. If you struggle to connect your design to your audience’s hearts as much as their heads, this session will give you tools to move people.

Audience Takeaways

  • Understand how to uncover the authentic emotions of an audience and how to know the difference between empathy and manipulation
  • Learn design techniques to evoke emotion rather than just imply it
  • Augment your creative process to naturally and authentically tap the emotional equity inherent in your audience
