Meet Jason Fox – A Servant Leader!

Meet Jason Fox - A Servant Leader!

Jason Fox is a Professor of Graphic Design, and Chair of the Graphic Design Department at his alma mater – Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he earned a B.F.A. in Illustration and Graphic Design, and an M.F.A. in Graphic Design.  After college, Jason started his professional life as a freelance illustrator, even as he functioned as a creative director and illustrator in the dental industry working with such companies as Brasseler USA, GlaxoSmithKline and Colgate Palmolive.  In 2000, he took a part time job teaching evening classes in graphic design, and it wasn’t long before he realized that this is where he was meant to make a difference.  In 2002, he made the switch to teaching full time, and after filling various academic leadership positions, accepted the role of department chair for SCAD’s graphic design programs in 2012.

Since taking on the role, Jason has spearheaded program revisions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with a view to the program and his students keeping pace with the industry; and he seeks to ensure professional relevance for graduates by constantly refreshing the course content.  Case in point, he facilitated the creation of a brand new graphic design program aptly named Graphic Design and Visual Experience which features increased emphasis on human context, data visualization and brand experiences; and In 2015, he co-led a SCAD team in partnership with Google to develop the first user experience (UX) design undergraduate program of its kind, specifically targeted to young designers seeking careers in UX.

When asked what he loved most about his career, Jason indicated that in his twofold position as professor and program chair, his desire to motivate and serve, has dovetailed with the fulfillment he derives from leading the largest graphic design program in the country.  As program chair, he is in a position to act as a catalyst for the future of design; and in the classroom he teaches, mentors and guides hundreds of students along the path to achieving their dreams, even as he prepares them for life.

A recurring theme in Jason’s life is one of service – in the classroom, with his peers; wherever he can contribute to the welfare of others.  He genuinely cares about people, and makes a point of serving in his community.  He has volunteered as a board member for The Next Generation, an organization focused on supporting the local children’s hospital, and was council president for the Lutheran Church of the Ascension.  Service is such an important part of Jason’s life that if money were no object, he would spend his time traveling and finding innovative ways to motivate, encourage and mentor people.  (He also indicated that he’d spend more time indulging his love of the outdoors and fly-fishing.)

Above all, Jason cherishes his family and deems fatherhood to be his greatest personal achievement.  A sentiment echoed by his wife who describes him as a loving, caring father and motivator to his college-aged son, and middle-school-aged daughter.  In addition to spending time outdoors, and fly fishing, Jason relishes quality time with his family, and the frequent trips they’ve taken together to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains.  As far as hobbies go, Jason admits to an unwavering interest in The American Civil War with particular reference to General William Tecumseh Sherman.

As easy-going as Jason Fox is, he cannot abide selfishness.  He indicates that encountering selfishness in any of its various forms irks him and he loses his ability to remain objective.  When asked to share a bit of life advice, Jason’s ready response summarized his world view – ‘don’t be selfish, give back … it will change your life.’
