Katie Dodd Syk is a thoughtful and considerate woman, whose life is a testament to the quest for happiness, populated with adventure, social justice and romance. When Katie left Annapolis, Maryland in 2003 to attend college, she had a notion of what she wanted out of life, but this rite of passage set her up for an unforeseen adventure.
At Boston College, Katie pursued a degree in English/Communications with the goal of getting a job in some capacity as a writer. A goal achieved, as she is currently employed at Volusion as a Search Marketing Specialist; a position that entails heavy content writing as she crafts unique campaigns based on client need, and industry. In the years between college and Volusion, Katie has lived and worked in London and Stockholm in various fields that drew on her writing, and innate copy editing skills.
Katie possesses a strong and active social conscience. She firmly believes that if one is in a position to help less fortunate people, that there’s no excuse for not doing so. During her college years and beyond, Katie put feet to her convictions both in the United States and abroad. During Spring break Katie took part in The Appalacia Program – a service-immersion, where she spent a week painting a high school gym in Rural Retreat, Virginia. She contributed to 4 Boston Weekly, and took a trip to Nicaragua through the Newton/San Juan del Sur Sister City Project where she financially supported the project she worked on. For Katie, her three week trip to Vietnam in 2014 with V4D, was frightening, thrilling and fulfilling. She boldly travelled to Ha Giang in the northern mountain region of Vietnam, unaccompanied by anyone familiar; and lived with a local family while teaching English to children. With this trip, Katie was able to simultaneously experience the culture, make a difference, fulfill a long held dream, and push the boundaries of her comfort zone in the process.
It’s been said that the exchange student experience has the power to change one’s life and perspective, and Katie found this to be absolutely true. In 2006, she chose to study abroad for a semester at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. Within hours of arriving in Perth, Katie met the man who would less than a decade later become her husband. Thus began an eventful multi-city courtship that has withstood culture shock, visa issues, menial jobs and housing difficulties.
Katie is happiest spending time with her husband, family and friends. She enjoys a good workout, reading, watching movies and being outdoors – she especially loves being near the ocean. Although she is currently navigating reverse culture shock, she’s having loads of fun in her new home base Austin, Texas, and sharing her experiences on her blog.
